Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve grouped the most common ones into three categories—click the tabs to explore answers based on where you are in your journey.

If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.

Applying to Tabula Rasa Retreat is simple—and we’ll guide you every step of the way.

First, book a free consultation with our team. It’s your chance to ask questions, share your goals, and see if our retreat is the right fit for your healing journey.

Next, you’ll complete an online application form where we gather information about your health history, emotional background, and personal needs. This helps our medical and therapeutic team assess your suitability.

Once reviewed, we’ll walk you through the medical clearance process, confirm your booking, and assist with payments and travel planning, so everything runs smoothly from the moment you leave home.

When you arrive in Portugal, you’ll settle into the retreat, meet our team, and begin preparing mentally, emotionally, and physically for your ibogaine treatment.

The treatment itself takes place under 24/7 medical supervision in a peaceful, private setting that supports deep transformation.

Afterwards, our team guides you through integration therapy, helping you process insights and embed lasting change.

And once you return home, you’re not alone—we offer continued support with check-ins, resources, and optional aftercare to help you stay on your path.

We’re an Ibogaine treatment centre based in the peaceful countryside of Portugal, and we specialise in deep, transformational healing using the psychoactive medicine called ibogaine.

Our retreat is not your typical rehab. We support people struggling with substance addictions, behavioural addictions, depression, anxiety, PTSD, emotional trauma, executive burnout—and even neurological conditions like Parkinson’s and mild traumatic brain injury.

What makes us different is how we work. We don’t just give you a treatment—we support you before, during, and after. With one-on-one counselling, group sessions, and a powerful integration program, we make sure the changes you experience here actually stick once you return home.

Our medical care is world-class. And as a team, many of us have walked the path of recovery ourselves. So we know—real healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes community, guidance, and the right environment.

That’s what we offer at Tabula Rasa. A place to reset. A place to heal. A place to become your own best healer.

That really depends—because this isn’t a magic fix. At Tabula Rasa, we’re not here to sell miracle cures. Psychedelic therapy, especially with ibogaine, can be deeply transformative—but only if you’re ready to do the work.

This means showing up fully—not just for the treatment itself, but for the preparation beforehand and the integration afterwards. If you’re committed to personal growth and willing to look honestly at yourself, then yes—psychedelic therapy could be the right path for you.

But it’s not about taking a substance and hoping for instant change. It’s about choosing healing—and showing up for that choice, every step of the way.

Ibogaine is a powerful plant medicine derived from the root of the Tabernanthe iboga shrub, traditionally used in West African spiritual ceremonies.

In the 1960s, a man named Howard Lotsof discovered that Ibogaine had a remarkable effect: it interrupted his heroin addiction—completely eliminating withdrawal symptoms and cravings. That moment sparked decades of research into its healing potential.

But Ibogaine goes far beyond addiction. It’s a deeply introspective medicine that brings unconscious patterns, memories, and emotions to the surface. This can be especially powerful for those dealing with PTSD, complex trauma, depression, or compulsive behaviours.

At a neurochemical level, it resets key pathways in the brain—particularly those involving dopamine and serotonin—helping restore emotional balance and mental clarity.

In essence, Ibogaine isn’t just a detox. It’s a doorway into deep self-awareness and lasting change.

Psychedelics—especially Ibogaine—can be powerful tools for trauma healing.

Here’s how it works: Ibogaine brings deeply buried memories and emotions into conscious awareness, often ones you may not even realise are still affecting you. But instead of reliving them, you observe them—almost like watching them from a distance.

This shift allows you to see past trauma more clearly and without the overwhelming emotional charge. It creates space to feel, understand, and begin to let go.

At Tabula Rasa Retreat, this process happens in a safe, nurturing environment, with professionals who guide you every step of the way. And after the experience, we help you integrate what surfaced—so the insights become part of your healing journey, not just a moment of insight.

That’s how real change begins—when trauma is no longer in the driver’s seat.

Absolutely—you don’t need to be struggling with addiction to benefit from Ibogaine.

Many people come to Tabula Rasa simply for a reset. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, burned out, or just disconnected from yourself, Ibogaine can help you gain deep insight into what’s working—and what isn’t—in your life.

It’s a powerful tool for emotional clarity, self-awareness, and healing the unseen patterns that might be holding you back. You don’t have to hit rock bottom to want change. Sometimes, you just need space to reconnect, reset, and realign with who you truly are.

And that’s exactly what we offer.

You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it.

Hi, I’m here to walk you through what a typical healing week looks like at Tabula Rasa Retreat.

Your journey starts Monday morning, when we pick you up from the airport and drive you to our centre in the Portuguese countryside. You’ll meet the team, settle in, and have your first group session with our counsellors. We’ll talk about why you’ve come, what to expect, and help you set a clear intention for your treatment. Then, you’ll join us for a powerful trauma release session using holotropic breathwork.

Tuesday is the day of your ibogaine treatment. You’ll meet with our head nurse in the morning, take a small test dose, and then begin your full flood dose. You’ll be closely monitored by our medical team the entire time, and gently guided into your inner journey.

Wednesday is all about rest and recovery. You’ll likely feel tired as the effects wear off, and we keep the schedule clear so you can stay in bed, reflect, and let the medicine continue doing its work.

Thursday is for integration. You’ll share what came up with your counsellor, and take part in a traditional temazcal sweat lodge to further detox your body and spirit. We’ll guide you through emotional resilience practices, meditation, and give you space to reflect.

On Friday, we start with yoga, massage, and meditation. Then we offer a short, optional 5-MeO-DMT session to help you process anything that still feels stuck. After lunch, we have more counselling, breathwork, cold exposure, and end the day with a closing circle.

Saturday, we say our goodbyes, pack up, and drive you back to the airport—restored, reconnected, and ready for the next chapter.

One of the most common questions we get is—how do we ensure your safety during an ibogaine ceremony?

At Tabula Rasa, your wellbeing is absolutely central to everything we do. Before you even arrive, we require a full medical history and a complete set of lab tests, including blood work, liver function, and an ECG to assess your heart health. This helps us make sure you’re a good fit for the treatment.

During your ibogaine session, we don’t take any chances. You’ll be monitored closely by our on-site medical team—who are all ACLS-certified by the American Heart Association. You’ll be connected to an ECG monitor, with an onboard defibrillator, throughout the experience so we can keep constant track of your heart rhythm.

There’s always a nurse present by your side, 24/7, to monitor your vitals, keep you hydrated, and supplement you with magnesium and potassium to support your heart and nervous system.

We’re offering a powerful, life-changing experience—but it’s only meaningful if it’s done safely. That’s why we never compromise on medical protocols. We earn your trust by being ready for everything, and we keep your safety at the heart of our healing work.

Absolutely—you will be supported emotionally and spiritually every step of the way.

At Tabula Rasa, we know that deep healing doesn’t just happen at the physical level. That’s why we place a huge emphasis on emotional and spiritual support before, during, and after your ibogaine treatment.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be welcomed into a compassionate, non-judgmental space. We start the week with group sessions to help you connect with others and set your personal intentions. You’ll also have one-on-one time with experienced counsellors who understand the emotional terrain of this work—because many of us have walked it ourselves.

Throughout the week, we guide you through integration circles, meditation, emotional resilience coaching, and somatic practices to help you process what’s coming up. After the treatment, we continue supporting you with integration tools, optional follow-up sessions, and a network of practitioners to help you carry the insights forward.

Spiritually, we create a sacred container for you to explore what matters most to you—whether that’s reconnecting with purpose, making peace with your past, or simply feeling held by something greater than yourself.

Healing doesn’t happen in isolation. At Tabula Rasa, you are never alone.

If you’re currently taking medication—especially antidepressants or psychoactive prescriptions—it’s crucial to speak with us well in advance.

You’ll need to stop these at least two weeks before treatment, or as advised by your doctor and our medical team. If you can’t safely taper off, unfortunately, we can’t proceed with Ibogaine treatment. This also applies to herbal remedies, vitamins, and non-prescription meds—many don’t mix well with Ibogaine, so full transparency is key.

If you’re preparing for treatment and use alcohol, stop at least 7 days before. If you’re at risk of withdrawal, you must medically detox first to avoid serious risks like delirium tremens.

Stimulants like cocaine, meth, ecstasy, or ADHD meds should also be stopped at least two weeks prior. These combinations can be dangerous.

If you’re on opiates such as methadone or Subutex (buprenorphine), either switch to a short-acting opiate at least 4 weeks before, or you may join our longer detox programme (up to 12-14 days) to help you make the transition.

If you’re using heroin or OxyContin, taper down your dose as much as possible beforehand.

Our goal is always to keep you safe—so just be honest with us and we’ll guide you step-by-step.

At Tabula Rasa, our approach to healing is holistic. That means we don’t just focus on the mind or the spirit—we work with your whole being.

We blend evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with somatic practices, breathwork, and meditation to help you process emotions not just intellectually, but physically and energetically. You’ll also be supported with yoga, cold exposure therapy, bodywork, and emotional resilience coaching.

These aren’t just things we “do” during the retreat. They’re practical tools you’ll learn and take home with you—so that once you return to your daily life, you’ll be better equipped to face challenges and support your own ongoing growth.

We’ll walk with you step by step, helping you become your own best healer.

Most people wait for crisis, trauma, disease, or loss to make up their mind to change. Don’t wait for that.

Absolutely—you can, and should, speak to someone before you book.

The most important important is to book an exploratory call with us, and ahead of that call, we would be grateful if you could complete our online application application form, so that we have material to discuss.

In fact, it’s the first and most important step of the process. After you complete our application form—which includes the condition you’re seeking treatment for and your medical history—we’ll schedule a free exploratory call with you.

This is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where you can ask questions, share your concerns, and get a feel for who we are. It’s also when our team assesses whether ibogaine is a safe and appropriate option for your specific situation.

We want you to feel fully informed, supported, and confident in your decision—and that starts with a real conversation.

The results our clients experience after the retreat can be truly life-changing—though they vary depending on what you’re here to heal.

For those treated for addiction, many report minimal withdrawal symptoms, significantly reduced cravings, and an overall boost in mood and clarity. Ibogaine offers a powerful reset that can break long-standing cycles.

If you’re coming for mental health reasons, people often describe a lifting of depressive symptoms, less anxiety, and an increased sense of emotional resilience and inner control. It’s not just about feeling better—it’s about understanding yourself in a deeper, more empowering way.

And for clients treated for Parkinson’s, we’ve seen improvements in mobility, less rigidity, and a renewed sense of connection between body and mind.

While everyone’s journey is different, the most common outcome is a profound shift—a clean slate—and the clarity to move forward with purpose.

We understand—at first glance, our treatment cost might seem high. But here’s what you’re really investing in.

At Tabula Rasa, your fee covers far more than just the ibogaine itself. You’re receiving round-the-clock medical care, a low guest-to-staff ratio, and support from a deeply experienced team—many of whom have walked this healing path themselves. Every member of our team, from nurses to counsellors, is here because we believe in ethical, effective healing—not profiteering.

We have 9 acres of well kept beuaitufl land, animals, vboutique style ensuite accommodation, first class nutritious and locally sourced meals.

Our retreat is based in the peaceful Alentejo region of Portugal, and for €6,621.60 for 6 days and 5 nights (including VAT), you receive personalised, medically supervised care, trauma-informed counselling, and a full integration program before, during, and after treatment.

If you were to consider it over the period of a year, that would amount an investment of under 20€ a day for that year.

We’re not a quick-fix clinic. We often help people who’ve been through failed detoxes or impersonal rehab experiences. Research shows that over 85% of addicts relapse after traditional rehab. That’s why we take a truly holistic approach—one that prepares you for the treatment and supports your transformation long after you leave.

So yes, our program has a cost. But when you consider what your addiction or suffering is already costing you—and how long-lasting our results can be—we believe this is one of the most valuable investments you can make.

If both of you are undergoing treatment, you can absolutely bring a friend or partner with you. In fact, we often welcome couples or close companions who wish to undergo treatment together.

That said, for the duration of the ibogaine treatment itself, each person will have their own private room. This is important—not only for your individual safety and medical monitoring, but also to help you stay focused on your own inner experience without distraction.

You’ll still share meals, integration sessions, and daily activities together, and there’s something truly powerful about doing this kind of deep work side by side.

Healing is deeply personal—but you don’t have to do it alone.
