At Tabula Rasa Retreat, we advise individuals who enroll in our alcohol addiction detox program to stop drinking alcohol at least seven days before their scheduled arrival. This is because ibogaine treatment can trigger seizures if alcohol consumption continues before treatment.

The risk of withdrawal seizures in alcoholics varies between 2% and 5%. These seizures can occur within the first 48 hours after the last drink or anytime within the first week of withdrawal. Individuals who have a history of previous detoxifications or hospitalizations unrelated to alcohol are more susceptible to experiencing withdrawal seizures due to the “kindling effect.”

The Kindling effect suggests that each withdrawal episode acts as a stimulant to the brain, and repeated episodes of alcohol withdrawal lower the threshold for seizures to occur. This increases the likelihood of individuals with a history of alcohol withdrawal experiencing seizures in the future.

Ibogaine treatment is a potent therapy for alcohol addiction, but it can place a strain on the cardiovascular system, particularly when combined with alcohol withdrawal stress. To ensure our clients’ safety, we cannot provide ibogaine treatment to individuals who test positive for alcohol upon arrival.

As a precautionary measure, our clients undergo a liver panel blood test with one of our specialized providers and receive close support from highly trained medical professionals. Above all else, we prioritize our clients’ medical safety and will not take any chances that could compromise their health.
