Heroin Addiction
Heroin addiction is a significant problem worldwide, and traditional rehab treatments often fail due to the complexity of the addiction. However, a new hope has emerged in the form of ibogaine, a psychoactive substance that can help alleviate heroin withdrawal symptoms and remove ensuing cravings for the drug.
As heroin is considered a short-acting opiate, ibogaine has been found to be highly effective in dealing with heroin addiction. During and after treatment, the expected withdrawal symptoms are mostly eradicated, and opiate receptors resume pre-addiction settings. This, coupled with the retreat’s holistic aftercare programs, can help people maintain sobriety upon returning home.
Withdrawal from heroin is notorious for causing severe symptoms such as diarrhea, painful cramps, panic attacks, vomiting, and more. Prolonged heroin use can reconfigure pleasure receptors in the brain, making it difficult to break the addiction.
While physical withdrawals are tough, the depletion of dopamine and serotonin levels during heroin use can cause an extended period of depression and lack of motivation. For some, this can be a motivating factor behind relapses.
Ibogaine, however, can bind to the same receptors in the brain affected by opiates, reducing cravings and other withdrawal symptoms. Furthermore, it is believed to have other effects on the brain, such as resetting neural pathways and promoting neuroplasticity. These effects may contribute to its ability to alleviate withdrawal symptoms.
At Tabula Rasa Retreat, experienced providers support participants in tapering down to 1 gram or less before arrival at the retreat. The retreat then offers a choice of a 6 or 10-day detoxification program, depending on the severity of the addiction. For those with lengthy and more complicated abuse histories, especially those trying to detox from buprenorphine or Subutex, the retreat recommends a 30-day program.
To achieve a life free from heroin, filled with hope and compassion, Tabula Rasa Retreat’s programs aim to start people on a path of inner work and understanding. Give us a call or, if you prefer, write us an email to discuss your treatment options.
