CONNECTED BREATHING (BREATHWORK)

“Our breath, like our heartbeat, is the most reliable rhythm in our lives.
When we become attuned to this constant rhythm, our breath can gradually
teach us to come back to the original silence of the mind.”
Donna Farhi

Introduction
Breathing properly can be a huge way to update your overall health. In fact, breathing is the bridge between mind and body, and the connection between consciousness and unconsciousness. What makes this human function even more powerful, is that it’s the only one we perform both consciously and unconsciously. It’s controlled by two sets of nerves – one which belongs to the voluntary nervous system and the other to the autonomic system.

We all have our own way of breathing. If you observe breathing patterns in others you will see great variation in speed, depth, location in the lungs, and in the length and type of pause between breaths.

The significance of a particular breathing pattern varies from person to person but they all say something about the way that person interacts with life. Shallow breathing often accompanies fear, however subtly that fear might be felt. Deep, full breathing often accompanies confidence, however quietly confidence might be expressed. When a full breather takes shallow breaths over a prolonged period, they begin to feel the hint of panic that lack of oxygen can induce. The shallow breather can feel that all the time, without being aware of it.

At TABULA RASA RETREAT we use breathwork therapy to help detoxif the body as well as to change old, constricted breathing patterns.

Spiritual Benefits of Iboga

Changing your breathing pattern through breathwork therapy has a profound impact on the way you feel, think, (re)act and connect to others.

The underlying premise of breathwork is that negative emotions from trauma and other painful experiences are often suppressed. Left unsolved, they can cause a variety of problems in life including unwanted behaviours, illness or addiction.

Breathwork is designed to naturally induce an altered state of consciousness that enables one to access these suppressed emotions and memories. Once accessed they can finally integrate and be released in a beneficial way.

History
This form of breath control has been used in various medical and spiritual practices for thousands of years.

It is long been known that changing the rate and flow of the respiratory cycle can bring forth profound shifts in consciousness, spiritual awareness, cognition and self-identity.

Stanislav Grof, a Czech psychiatrist, knew of this, in scientific circles and from his early studies of LSD and its effects on the psyche—the field of psychedelic therapy. Building on his observations while conducting LSD research and on Otto Rank’s theory of birth trauma, Grof constructed a theoretical framework for prenatal and perinatal psychology and transpersonal psychology in which LSD trips and other powerfully emotional experiences were mapped onto a person’s early fetal and neonatal experiences. Over time, this theory developed into what Grof called a “cartography” of the deep human psyche. Following the suppression of legal LSD use in the late 1960s, Grof went on to develop the theory that many states of mind could be explored without drugs by using certain breathing techniques (connected breathing).

Benefits of Ibogaine

Breathwork in recovery
This unique form of holistic therapy can be done in an addiction treatment setting on a one-on-one basis or in a group setting. In an addiction treatment setting with an experienced breathwork therapist, clients are guided through a series of breathing sessions in which they are able to alter their breathing patterns and deeply detoxify their bodies. These changes can help calm, centre and focus the mind. Over time this practice leads to a deeper sense of inner connection, a strong sense of grounding, profound relaxation, emotional empowerment and an overall harmony of body and mind through its strong detoxifying effects.

It is of great importance that you continue breathwork therapy for a while after you have left us.
Breathwork keeps connecting you to your healthy, creative self, whilst it can free you from traumatic experiences, it further helps you to detoxify even more and keeps you grounded.

Benefits of breathwork
We would describe the benefits of breathwork overall as detoxing all levels of your being, physical, emotional and mental.

Detoxing the physical body
There are many benefits to deep conscious breathing and detoxing the body is one of them. OXYGEN HELPS THE BODY ABSORB VITAMINS, NUTRIENTS, AND MINERALS MORE EFFICIENTLY.

It also promotes the creation of white blood cells. Every time you inhale your lungs fill with oxygen that thereafter get transported in your blood throughout other detoxing organs including: the lymphatic system, kidneys, colon, and even the uterus for women.

Conversely, every time we exhale we eliminate part of the body’s waste in the form of carbon dioxide.

By breathing deeply, we take in more oxygen that cleanses the body, and by exhaling deeply, we eliminate more waste. Both actions have an overall detox effect on the body.

We often take breathing for granted and under estimate the importance of drawing awareness to our breath. However, this can result in shallow breathing with side effects that include fatigue, and decreased tissue function. Additionally, the brain cannot function to its fullest potential if it is not receiving enough oxygen.

When you practice deep rhythmic breathing the diaphragm expands. It relaxes the body and massages your lymphatic system which helps in the elimination of toxins. If you aren’t breathing deeply or moving on a regular basis, your lymphatic fluids become stagnant and this essentially blocks the system from eliminating waste. A poorly functioning lymphatic system can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems, weight gain, fatigue, and inflammation.

Detoxing emotions
During our life we accumulate not only toxins but also emotions in our bodies. Through deep, conscious breathing we can release old, entrapped emotions.

The deeper we breathe, the more we feel and the less emotional charge stays in our bodies. Unfortunately, this is not the way most of us react to unpleasant emotions. We tend to breathe shallower if we feel insecure, lonely, anxious or worried. In this way, these emotions stay in our system.

Our breath is closely connected to our feelings. If we feel happy, we breathe fully and deeply. If we are afraid, we breathe shallow and take less air in. In this way we avoid the unpleasant feelings and enhance the good feelings. In this way we unconsciously control what we want to feel and what we don´t want to feel.

Psycho-Spiritual Development

Detoxing the mind
If we do not cleanse our system from old, unreleased emotions from time to time, our mind gets clouded with anxious, worrisome or sad thoughts, because the body still informs the brain we are having an emotion and the brain then produces thoughts accordingly. After a breathwork session we remain with a calm and quiet mind.

What to expect
A breathwork session lasts approximately 60 minutes. You will be laying down comfortably on a mattress and be breathing through the mouth with your eyes closed. You may start with deep inhalations into the lower abdomen while the facilitator explains the unique breathing technique to you. There will be music accompanying your experience.

During the session you might feel resistance coming up in the form of thoughts, restlessness, dry mouth, anxiety or tiredness.

Your system might be overwhelmed by the amount of fresh oxygen entering.

Other sensations you may experience during a session could be laughing, crying, sweating, feeling cold, cramps, feeling pins and needles; the energy moves through your body and amplifies your physical blockages!

The facilitators are here to guide and support your process. Therefore, they might do some body mapping, which is touching the areas of your respiratory system where breath is not flowing, to bring more oxygen into these areas. These areas sometimes hold trauma or distorted energy, and it can be painful or bring up old emotions. All emotions are welcome in breath sessions.

We also encourage toning, which is a healing process used to bring more oxygen into your session, or to dissipate feelings of being overwhelmed.

Promising Recovery Results

During toning we simultaneously activate the vocal cords and physical movement of your arms and legs.
The session ends with a period of deep, rewarding relaxation.

During a breathwork session we want
• to start our breath in the lower abdomen
• to take deep conscious inhalations
• to take short, releasing exhalations
• the belly to rise when we inhale, fall when we exhale
• to connect our inhalation and exhalations, no pauses between the two
• to visualize a circle of breath, an ongoing never-ending wave
• to surrender to our breath and the music
• to observe our breath
